LAUDATE PUERI DOMINUM

Congratulations to the Gallery Choir for their stunning rendition of Mawby's Laudate Pueri Dominum. The event on 15th March was packed with over 200 guests, old boys, parents and friends of the school.

Order the disc from our school shop if you missed out…

NEWS IN FROM BEN OAKLEY ('98-'03)

Ben is looking forward to singing in Geneva later in March with the choir of King's College Cambridge, where he is currently studying for a degree in music.

OLD BOY RETURNS

Old Boy Michael Walshe and his wife Wendy popped in to see the Choir School. Michael sang as a chorister in 1946 when the school only had 3 floors and 18 pupils!

WORLD PREMIÉRE AND RECITAL!

Westminster Cathedral Hall, 15th March 2011, 7.15 pm

WCCS OBA hosted the première of 'Laudate Pueri Dominum' by internationally renowned choral composer and previous Master of Music, Colin Mawby. The piece was commissioned by the Old Boys' Association, and performed by the Gallery Choir of Westminster Cathedral Choir School.

We also welcomed the young, vibrant Solstice Quartet, and renowned clarinettist David Campbell who played Mozart's Clarinet Quintet.

MUSIC STANDS

The OBA has revolutionised music practice at WCCS! Flexible, wall-mounted music stands have been fitted around the school to help the choristers get the most from their practice sessions.

CARDINAL HUME AWARD

The Cardinal Hume Award is awarded to a boy in year 7 who embodies the Benedictine ideals of generosity, commitment, helpfulness and good humour. The winning boy will have his name displayed on a brand new plaque, displayed in the main entrance. The first award winner is Matteo Pozzi.

1st ANNUAL CARDINAL HUME DINNER

In order to raise money for new music stands at the school, the OBA auctioned a number of wonderful items during the Cardinal Hume Dinner. The top prize was two roundtrip tickets to Rome followed by a guided tour of the Vatican. The tour guide was recommend to the OBA through Father Joseph Tham.

Miss Claire Roberts (Director of Studies/English) and Miss Von Wulffen (Teacher of Classics) of WCCS were the successful bidders. To read about their experience, please click here.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ELLIOT SMITH (2000-'05)

Elliot has won a place at University College, Oxford, to study Chemistry. As a Choral Scholar, he sings Evensong with the college choir at 5.45pm every Sunday.

Elliot has also sung 'Feeling Good' at a concert for The Master of the college during his first term and participated in songs from the shows - quite a departure from choral music!

NEXT STOP, X-FACTOR!

Our talented OBA Chair, Nicholas Morrell, recently teamed-up with fellow Old Boy, Hugo Walker, to produce a catchy Christmas tune and video called Dabee Dooba Christmas.

Join the thousands who have already watched the video on YouTube here.

Keep an eye out for the current WCCS choristers who have a dance part in the video.

THE RECORD

The OBA, with the Head Master, has recently created a newsletter, called The Record which will highlight WCCS current events and news.

The inaugural issue was handed out on July 25th at the Cardinal Hume Dinner.

The Record will also look to profile various Old Boys. We welcome any news. Please contact Mrs. Digrandi (lisadigrandi@yahoo.co.uk).

FCOCA MEMBERSHIP

In May 2010, WCCS was asked to join the Federation of Cathedral Old Choristers' Associations (www.onceachorister.org). WCCS is the first Catholic choir school to join and are honoured to have been welcomed.
