SEEING
SICILY IN STYLE
WCCS boys discover there’s more to Sicily than temples and
tombs.
Since ancient times, Sicily
has been a special place; the Carthaginians thought that
it was worth a visit, as did the Greeks, Romans and a motley
crew of pirates, not to mention almost every other European
power since. So it was surely only a matter of time until
the fearless boys of WCCS followed them in their recent
trip to the island during the Easter holidays.
We covered an amazing amount
of ground: Segesta, Selinunte, Corleone, Agrigento, Piazza
Amerina, Siracusa, Palermo and, most spectacularly of all,
the volcanic island of Stomboli (which very helpfully erupted
as we took photos from our boat).
It wasn’t all temples, tombs
and trotting around ancient sites; we managed to fit in an
extraordinary amount of ice cream, cannoli, swimming, shopping
and a spot of karaoke in Letojanni too (Tim’s disco moves
were an inspiration to all who saw them). Year 8 boys even
managed to get some Latin vocabulary revision done on the
beach.
Many thanks to all the boys
who took part for making it such fun, and to Mr Thurnhill
and Mrs Marchant for all their hard work and good humour!
