WCCS
BOWLED OVER BY ST PHILIP'S
The cricket season got underway with two fantastic performances (but two last-over
defeats) against St.Philip's.
In the 1st XI match, some
tight bowling managed to restrict St.Philip's to 110-4
from their 20 overs with Charles Ingell being particularly
impressive in picking up two wickets. In reply, Jamie Machin
made a patient, unbeaten 24 but WCCS were always behind
the run rate and even though some big-hitting in ther final
over would have brought victory we finished 16 short of
our target on 95-4.
The U11 XI match was even closer with St.Philip's managing
to win off of the penultimate ball. A solid batting display
from WCCS saw us set a target of 61, with Chris Abdo both
top-scoring and hitting the only boundary of the innings.
When Captain Sam Storey picked up two wickets in successive
balls it looked like WCCS would secure a deserved victory,
but despite Dominic Sparks' heroics - he picked up a wicket,
took a stunning catch, and executed a brilliant run-out
within five minutes - St.Philip's crawled over the winning
line with just one ball remaining.
A very pleasing start to
the season which promises much for the (hopefully warm
and sunny) weeks ahead…
