MUSIC

Music is both a curriculum subject, and an extra-curricular activity at Westminster Cathedral Choir School.

CHORISTERS
Choristers are taught both by the Master of Music of Westminster Cathedral and by the School’s Head of Music.

Every chorister receives the following formal musical tuition, every week, during term time.

Piano* (1 lesson)
Singing* (1 lesson)
Orchestral Instrument (1 lesson)

*Piano and singing lessons are funded by the School; orchestral instrument lessons are charged to parents at £34.80 per hour.

In addition, choristers sing together, under the Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral, in Song School, at the following times:

Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday 8.10 am – 9.00 am
Saturday 8.15 am – 9.15 am & 9.45 am – 10.25 am
Sunday 9.30 am – 10.15 am & 12.10 pm – 1.00 pm

Choristers may also join the School’s orchestra or training orchestra.

The boys of Westminster Cathedral Choir sing live in Westminster Cathedral on the following times during term-time.

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday (Mass) 5.30 pm
Saturday (Mass) 10.30 am
Sunday (Mass) 10.30 am (Solemn Vespers and Benediction) 3.30 pm

 

DAY BOYS
Day boys may choose to have tuition in up to two instruments per week, from the following list.

Bassoon
Cello
Clarinet
Double Bass
Flute
French Horn
Oboe
Trombone
Trumpet
Viola
Violin

Instrumental tuition takes place during academic class time, with parents’ permission.
(Day boys are not required to have tuition in any musical instrument, if this is their parents’ wish.)

Currently, parents are charged £34.80 per lesson.

Day boys may also join the School’s orchestra, or training orchestra, or some of the following ensemble groups.

String Group
Flute Group
Brass Group
Clarinet Group

In addition, day boys have their own Gallery Choir which meets before school on three mornings a week.

Tuesday 8.15 am – 8.45 am Full choir
Thursday 8.15 am – 8.45 am 1st trebles
Friday 8.15 am – 8.45 am 2nd trebles and altos

 

CLASS MUSIC: CHORISTERS AND DAYBOYS
Class music lessons for all boys, under the School’s Head of Music, are part of the academic timetable.

Year 4 2 lessons
Year 5 2 lessons
Year 6 1 lesson
Year 7 1 lesson
Year 8 1 lesson
